The South Arkansas Arts Center has announced a new exhibit, “Glances: Fresh Views of Lands and Life” featuring oil paintings by Texas artist V….Vaughan, which will hang at the Merkle Gallery until June 28.
An artist reception for Vaughan is scheduled for June 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Vaughan is an impressionist oil painter who paints on location throughout America.
“My favorite subjects are in wild places and in the countryside near American lands, coasts and small farms,” she said.
She shares her very personal journey with SAAC through the exhibit, she said.
For 30 years, Vaughan lived on his family farm just outside Austin in Manor, Texas. The multi-generational farm eventually gave way to Austin’s urban sprawl, giving the family no choice but to sell it.
During the last year on the farm, for 365 days, Vaughan painted small works daily depicting his family’s story of change. “Last Year on the Farm” was his story about the passing of America’s small farms and way of life.
“I remember every moment of the creation of each painting: the time of day, the temperature and the direction of the wind! Each was a little ‘goodbye’ to the place I loved the most. Now, I release each painting like a blow on a dandelion to scatter the seeds,” she says.
For more than 25 years, Vaughan has been a part-time art teacher at a high school in Austin. She also teaches painting workshops all over the country and will be teaching in a chateau in France this year.
Vaughan will also be leading a workshop while his works are on display at SAAC. The artist will share his favorite drawing technique, promising participants that they will leave better draftsmen, with the ability to capture a glance. The first hour of the workshop will be a refresher on perspective and proportion, followed by an exploration of different media to “Catch a Glance”. Her teaching style is friendly and fun, and participants will enjoy seeing your own success.
The workshop will take place on Tuesday, June 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
